What you should take into consideration is the non-refundable fee for the visa interview ($160), plus the non-refundable SEVIS fee, required by the U.S. Department of State ($35).

Obtaining a visa: the J-1 Visa is a non-immigrant visa issued by a consular official at a U.S. Embassy. Eligibility for a J-1 Visa depends on the specific exchange program being offered to the J-1 non-immigrant by a sponsor organization.
Every candidate is required to have the following documents in order to start the application procedure:
- – a valid passport;
- – a completed DS-160 Application form;
- – a DS-2019 form (acceptance to a designated exchange visitor program) – the original and one photocopy;
- – a 35 USD SEVIS fee payment receipt;
- – a payment receipt for the visa fee (160 USD);
- – a student book (студентска книжка);
- – a certificate (уверение) issued by the education instituting;
- – an additional photo;
- – any other documents the applicant feels are necessary to illustrate strong ties to Bulgaria.
